Malachy is the seventh of eight children. He grew up in Whitehead, a quite little seaside town near Belfast. His parents had recently moved from Dublin and chose to name him after a local saint. Malachy came to England for college and then taught in Leeds for a year, packed polo mints in a factory for six months and worked in advertising for seven years. Malachy then moved to Wales with his wife, bought a smallholding and raised pigs, goats, chicken and children. He worked as a care assistant in a local residential special school for seven years, before getting a teaching job at another special school. Malachy and his family then moved to Machynlleth and shortly after he began writing for children. Malachy now writes full-time when his not visiting schools or escaping from it all in the mountains. His books are available in 12 different languages.

Malachy has written the award-winning Cow, The Dancing Tiger, Georgie, Who is Jesse Flood, Tales of Old Ireland and Storm Cats for Simon and Schuster.

Malachy’s most recent title is Big Pig a heart-warming story with lively, lyrical text and gently humorous illustrations by John Bendall-Brunello.
