The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as 1848 children and adults alike enjoyed the delights of NCBF Gala Day 2009. The event hosted by Stockton Library Service was held at the Stockton Riverside College a venue, which could not have lent itself more perfectly to the occasion.
Thirteen fabulous children's authors and illustrators captivated audiences of all ages as they brought the magic of books to life, with everything from lively dancing and singing to spine tingling adventure and hilarious poetry renditions. There really was something to suit everyone and as if that wasn't enough, thrilled children could meet their favourite authors and illustrators whilst getting their purchases from the onsite bookshop signed!
With the day's theme being 'Heroes and Villains' from children's literature, delighted onlookers held their breath in excited anticipation as darning Robin Hood ducked and dived amongst the crowds to avoid capture by the fearsome Sheriff of Nottingham. Twelve library authorities provided hours of fabulous themed crafts and activities for all ages, whilst under fives were kept thoroughly entertained with activities provided by local Children's Centres and Seven Stories 'Story Parties'.
Children just didn't know which way to turn with the massive array of activities and entertainment going on all around them. Students from the college even got involved offering a whole range of hair and beauty therapies and playing the part of PC Preston who, to the amusement of the crowds, spent the whole day chasing the elusive burglar.
This great Gala Day really was too good to miss and offered a fantastic day out for all the family. The whole day was summed up by one little boy who told the children's author Julia Jarman ' this is the bestest party I have ever been to!' We couldn't put it better ourselves. Make sure you look out for next year's Gala Day at South Tyneside, they just keep getting better and better!
