Paul Cookson was born in 1961 and brought up just outside Preston, in Lancashire. Early ambitions were to play football for Everton or electric guitar in Slade, although, after all the usual exams, he actually qualified as a teacher and taught full-time for five years.
He published his first selection of poems in 1980, and has now published over fifteen solo collections for both adults and children for A Twist In The Tale publishers. A Twist In The Tale has also been responsible for publishing work by Henry Normal, Ian McMillan, David Harmer and Martyn Wiley.
As well as performing and leading workshops with pupils, Paul is also an experienced In Service Training speaker and has led workshops for adults in a variety of situations. He has appeared at various literature festivals - Cheltenham, Hay-on-Wye, Edinburgh, Swansea, NCBF, Greenbelt to name a few.
Paul often works with David Harmer in the popular performance poetry duo Spill The Beans and has appeared on radio and television, most recently on Wham Bam Strawberry Jam! for BBC Children's Television.
Paul still listens to Slade and still supports Everton Football Club. If he has any spare time he tends to spend too much money on CDs, books and loud shirts and playing five-a-side football.
Paul lives in Retford, Nottinghamshire with his wife Sally, son Sam, and daughter Daisy.
