How can I get a visiting author for my school in Durham?

Best bet would be to contact the NCBF organiser within Durham Libraries...ring their Central Library. I'm sure they'll be able to point you in the right direction.

Another approach would be to contact the author's publisher directly (Google the publisher for their Marketing/Press dept).

Many authors have websites - see our list on the site - with contact details for school visits.

Please help. Finding out background on this site about the festival and it seems to indicate that it is a free festival, including events in libraries and gala day. If that is the case, why have pupils had to contribute £2.50 per head for an author to visit today as part of this festival?

The Gala Day is certainly free of charge to all visitors. The Northern Children's Book Festival and the host library authority bear the cost of it and do not pass this cost on to the families who take part.
The weekday author events are slightly different. Each library authority has to pay for each author day they host. This cost is usually passed onto the schools who are having the author visit. Some schools then recoup some or all of this by charging each pupil taking part in the visit. This is a local decision and one over which neither NCBF nor the particular library authority has any control.
