Julie Bertagna was born in Ayrshire, Scotland in 1962. She moved to Glasgow at the age of seven and grew up just outside the city. Julie studied English at the city’s University and now lives in Glasgow’s West End with her husband and young daughter.

Julie knew from a very early age that she wanted to be a writer: at the age of 7 she spent her time making up stories in her head. Although she worked as a journalist after university, it was not until she was 25 and working as a primary school teacher that Julie actually sat down to write the story that was within her. Her first novel, The Spark Gap was shortlisted for the Angus Award and Soundtrack, her second novel for teenagers, won a Scottish Arts Council Award and was shortlisted for the South Lanarkshire Award.

Julie has also written titles for younger readers; Clumsy Clumps and the Baby Moon, The Ice Cream Machine and Dolphin Boy, the latter of which was shortlisted for both the NASEN Special Educational Needs Awards and the Blue Peter Book Awards.
